Emergency Patch for Adobe Flash Player

A dangerous security hole has been discovered in Adobe Flash Player browser plugin. Adobe Systems Inc. has released an emergency update to fix this vulnerability and advise users to update the program as quickly as possible. The vulnerability is already being exploited in targeted attacks.

The latest version of Flash v. 18.0.0.194 fixes the critical flaw. It is has been reported that systems running Internet Explorer for Windows 7 and below, as well as Firefox on Windows XP, are known targets of these exploits.

If you are not sure if your browser has Flash installed or would like to know the version it is running, click this link https://www.adobe.com/software/flash/about/. To force the installation of an available update on Chrome, click the triple bar icon to the right of the address bar and select “About Google Chrome”. Click the apply update button and restart the browser.

Do take note when you download the most recent version of Flash from its homepage, https://get.adobe.com/flashplayer/ disable unwanted add-ons, like McAfee Security Scan. Uncheck the pre-checked box before downloading it.

You may want to consider if you really need Flash Player installed. If you don’t, remove it or do not install it at all.

Zero-day vulnerability – a security hole in software that is unknown to the vendor. This hole is then exploited by hackers before it becomes known to the vendor and fixes it.
